For example, if a record label was celebrating it's 20th year and decided to give away a CD with one track from each of those years, this would be a sampler. The second way of looking at thing would also mean that any free or low-priced gathering of tracks that is not a larger release (say an album) is a sampler, no matter when it was released. Subjective tags in Format are to be avoided. That makes it a Sampler to the third person and not a sampler to the first (and sort of a sampler and sort of not to the second). Another person may have some and a third may have none. I may have every song on it in another form. The other argument is that 'preview' here equals "before I buy" not "pre-release" Or in other words: its a preview for me as customer, not pre-release preview for whole world.įirst of all, the second definition is subjective.
